Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Board of Education met at the central office on Monday, March 16, 2009. Below is a summary of business items.

Consent Agenda

The Board approved an audit contract for the annual yearly audit the district is required to have done by an independent auditing firm.

The staffing allocation guidelines agenda item was moved from the consent agenda to the end of the old business section of the agenda per the request of Board members.

New Business

The Board voted to amend the current school year calendar (2008-09) to accommodate a missed school day on March 2 when the district had to close due to inclement weather. Several shifts in the calendar were necessary as a result of the missed day. The Board voted to: 1) make Friday, April 10, a student day (was originally the Good Friday holiday); make Monday, April 13, a holiday (was originally a required annual leave day for 10 month staff); and making Wednesday, June 17, a required annual leave (i.e. vacation day for 10 month staff). The only day that would affect students would be Friday, April 10. The Board voted to make this a half day of school as a compromise for families who may have vacation reservations for which they have already paid.

The Board discussed its facility rental policy and decided to have place the item on a later Board meeting agenda (probably after April).

Old Business

The Board discussed the 2009-2010 child nutrition meal price recommendations, but chose not to vote on the recommendations at this meeting. A concern was the raising of lunch prices in the upcoming school year. Board Chair Kathie Russell recommended the Board wait to discuss financial scenarios if the Board does not raise lunch prices until results of a parent survey due back by the end of March were received.

The Board voted to adopt the local current expense and capital outlay portions of its local budget, but did not act on the child nutrition portion of the local budget. The local current expense portion of the budget chosen was ā€œscenario Iā€ (in black text) on the chart with that one and contingency scenarios in blue, green, orange, and burgundy.

The Board approved the 2009-10 school calendar as presented.

The Board briefly discussed staffing allocation guidelines developed recently in an effort to ensure equity among schools and provide information to the general public about staffing in schools. Once approved, the district will begin using the guidelines to staff future openings of new schools and frame future budget discussions. The Board decided its questions were adequately answered and voted to approve the staffing allocation guidelines.
