Pittsboro, NC - The Chatham County Board of Education held a meeting on Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the central office board room.

Under its new meeting format consent agenda, the Board approved the following items:
1. Revision of policy 2300 about Board meetings
2. 2008–2009 Board meeting calendar
3. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) School Choice designation
4. Classified salary study
5. Saffelle custodial services contract extension
6. 2008-2009 budget resolution
7. Student releases from Chatham County Schools to attend Lee County Schools
(Please refer to the June 9th Board meeting summary for details of the discussion of items under the consent agenda.)

The Board recognized Phillip Little, a social studies teacher at Northwood who is the 2008-09 Chatham County Teacher of the Year. The Board also recognized Robbie Sirls, a teacher assistant at J.S. Waters School who is the 2008-09 Chatham County Teacher Assistant of the Year.

The Board approved a request by Robin Parks, Director of Career-Technical Education, to endorse a funding-related plan that needs to be sent to the state.

There were three items of new business:
1. Architectural contract for the new high school – The district has resolved issues with CRZ. The Board will have a contract to review at its next meeting.

2. Chatham County Schools staffing organizational framework – Superintendent Robert Logan announced changes he plans to make. The Chief Technology Officer position will not be re-hired. Instead Peggy Douglas, who has been serving as Director of Instructional Technology, will become the Director of Technology. The department will be under the umbrella of the superintendent’s office. Logan will establish a special assistant to the superintendent position that will deal with parental concerns, student transfers, and student matters. Carrie Little, currently the principal of Northwood High School, will take this position. The district will conduct a search across the southeastern United States for a new principal at Northwood. Logan will also look to add some administrative clerical support for these central office administrators using existing resources.

3. 2007-2008 budget amendments – Chief Finance Officer Susan Little brought the final set of budget amendments for the current fiscal year that ends on June 30.

4. PreK programs fee schedule approval – The Board moved this item from its consent agenda and further discussed potential changes to county PreK programs that would make them more uniform. The Board voted to approve the presented fee schedule.

When the personnel agenda was approved, Logan noted that the principal of North Chatham, Mattie Smith, will be moved to the principalship of Horton Middle School.
