Chatham county, NC - In an effort to encourage the staff and faculty to exercise more and be role models for their students, a competion was created with prizes awarded to the top teams based on how many steps were taken.

Seventeen teams competed during the month of November logging all steps taken on a weekly basis. All team members turned in their steps for the week to their captain every Monday morning and then reset their pedometers and began a new week. Steps were recorded twenty-four hours a day including weekends. Participants were also encouraged to drink more water and less soft drinks.

The North Chatham booster club bought all the pedometers and provided the prizes as well. Each member of the winning teams received either a $50 gift certificate, for first place, or a $25 gift certificate, for second place.

In January, the teams will once again do the pedometer challenge, but on an individual basis only. The participants will turn in weekly totals on Monday mornings and at the end of February the top three individuals will be announced.

First place was awarded to (Captain) Kris Malboeuf, Vickie Keck, Laurinda Clarke, Joy Jackson, Joe Paige and Jana Bosscher. They logged over 1,500,000 steps or about 765 miles. The second place team, who lost by only 41,000 steps, consisted of the cafeteria staff that included (Captain) Jean Cockman, Sarah Kirby, Diane Smith, Debbie Smith, Becky Alford and Jan Dixon.
