Southern Pine beetle loss reduction workshop

Pittsboro, NC - A Managing Pine Stands to Reduce Losses by Southern Pine Beetles Workshop will be held on Thursday, February 9, at 7:00 pm. The speakers will also explain the State's new southern pine beetle cost-share program. The workshop will be in the auditorium downstairs in the County Agriculture Building in Pittsboro. The workshop is being conducted by the Chatham County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Dr. Dennis Hazel, Forestry Extension Specialist at North Carolina State University; and Bill DeMay, District Forester with the N C Division of Forest Resources will give the presentation from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Southern Pine Beetle

Southern pine beetles (SPB) remain the most costly problem for private forest landowners in North Carolina on an annual basis. These pests impact pines throughout the state. However, by maintaining vigorous healthy stands of pine, losses can be greatly minimized. With assistance from the President's Healthy Forests Initiative, the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources has added 13 regional foresters whose focus is assisting private landowners manage their forests to minimize risk and to assist them when SPBs occur. Dr. Dennis Hazel will review SBP biology and stand-manage activities that can reduce risks. Bill DeMay will review the Division's SPB status and outlook for the region as well as discussing the Division's new pine tree thinning program and available cost-sharing.

The registration fee will be $5.00 per person in advance or at the door.
