Chatham Extension office offers forestry management tour

Pittsboro, NC - Chatham County residents interested in learning about recommended forestry management and timber harvesting practices can sign up for a tour of local forest landowner properties on May 1 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The tour is jointly hosted by the Chatham County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, Edwards and Randolph Forest Management Group, and Chatham County Farm Bureau. The tour theme is “Practicing Forestry while Preserving Land Values."

The tour departs from the front of the Chatham County Agriculture Building in Pittsboro at 8:30 am and return at 4:30 pm. Chatham County Farm Bureau sponsors a free catered lunch served at Mount Olive Baptist Church.

The tour includes Dan Edwards as the main presenter, but the various landowners at the forest sites also will educate participants about forest practices and operations.

The tour features pre-commercial thinning of young natural overstocked pine stands, an active on-going commercial thinning operation in a planted pine stand and practices that maintain or enhance the land value. These land value enhancing practices will include thinning, clear cutting small areas, and retaining critical buffers and natural areas.

The registration fee is $10.00 per person in advance or paid at the door. Participants must pre-register by Monday, April 27, by calling Jane Tripp, Extension Secretary, at 919....

The registration fee covers van transportation, refreshments, snacks, tour packets, and advertising. A free catered lunch will be provided.
