Tax time is fast approaching and once again the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will provide volunteer tax preparers for seniors and other low to middle income clients. Free assistance in completing Federal and North Carolina income tax returns is available in Chatham County. The service, intended for people whose returns are not complex or long, includes free electronic filing for qualifying returns. This method of filing significantly speeds the receipt of a refund, if one is due.

Volunteers will work in Pittsboro at the Council on Aging Senior Center on HWY 87 North every other Wednesday, February 4 to April 7 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and on alternate Saturdays, February 14 to April 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In Siler City, volunteers will be at the Siler City Senior Center (JOCCA Bldg) on alternate Wednesdays, February 11 to April 7 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

In a continuing effort to bring this free service to more clients a new location has been established for 2004. On Saturday, February 21, March 20 and April 3rd , volunteers will be available at Saint Julia Parish Church from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Saint Julia is located at 210 Harold Hart Rd (US 64 E).

Appointments are necessary so please call Evelyn White at 542-4512 to arrange your session. People of all ages are welcome as are non-English speaking. Volunteer Tax preparers are trained and tested according to IRS and North Carolina guidelines. If possible non-English speaking should bring an Interpreter. VITA is offered through the Orange County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).
