Proposed Chatham County budget unveiled

The Chatham County Manager’s Office has released the proposed county budget for 2008-09, which includes a 5.5-cent property tax increase to 67.2 cents.

Sixty-six percent of North Carolina voters rejected local tax increases Tuesday, sending 22 of 24 proposed tax hikes to defeat. Those results send a message that local governments should avoid pursuing sales and land-transfer tax increases in the future, said John Locke Foundation President John Hood.

The play is produced, directed and preformed by students of The Department of Dramatic Art at the UNC through the support of The Carolina Student Arts Grant.

Sedimentation & erosion control program wins top state honor

Earlier this year, Chatham’s Erosion and Sedimentation Control Program received one of two top statewide awards at a banquet hosted by the NC Sedimentation Control Commission. The awards program has two categories based on staff size, with Chatham winning the top award for programs with no more than three full-time staff members.
