Co-op celebrates the county's creative spirit on the lawn at Chatham Mills

Pittsboro, NC - Chatham Marketplace, Chatham County's co-op grocery located in historic Chatham Mills at 480 Hillsboro Street in Pittsboro, invites everyone to its first poetry slam, Saturday, September 9, 4-8pm, rain or shine on the Chatham Mills porch and lawn.

A poetry slam is a competitive event in which poets perform their work and are scored by judges selected from the audience. Poetry slams are as much fun for audience members as they are for performers because they are engineered for the entertainment of the audience as well as a way to encourage poetry in the community. The audience is encouraged to react vocally and openly to all aspects of the show, including the poet's performance, the judges' scores, and the host's banter.

All participating poets must read or recite their own original work in three minutes or less. Everyone is encouraged to participate. Whether you are a seasoned writer or you are digging a crumpled piece of paper with a few lines of your heartfelt verse out of the trash can, we invite you to perform!

Kids 12 and under are invited to participate from 4pm to 5pm. Teens and adults will compete from 5pm to 8pm.

Entrants in the teen and adult section should come prepared with several selections to participate in rounds of competition. Everyone who signs up will have the opportunity to read in the first round, and the judges? scores determine who will be in subsequent rounds. This is a family-friendly event, so excessive foul language or sexual content is not allowed.

The top three finishers in each category will receive passes to the Shakori Hills Music Festival and Chatham Marketplace t-shirts and coupons.

The Poetry Slam is being held the weekend of Chatham Marketplace's first Owner Appreciation Days. Although everyone is welcome to shop at Chatham Marketplace, owners will be eligible for a 10% discount on all their purchases on Sunday, September 10.
