Fiddlers’ Conventions are and have been a unique part of North Carolina’s musical and cultural heritage for over a century. Hoppin’ John features contests for old-time, bluegrass and non-traditional stringbands, and individuals can perform in a variety of categories including fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, folk song, dance and youth musicianship. Don’t worry, the gambling is legal and the money raised will help establish an annual scholarship for a Chatham County high school senior who plans on majoring in the arts.

The Bynum General Store opened 71 years ago and was one of five stores in Bynum back when it was a lively, bustling cotton mill town. The mill closed in the 1970s, and community life began to change. There will be 50 plus bands playing on four stages – two large outdoor stages, one intimate covered Cabaret Tent and one covered Dance Tent. Long before the amps and mics are loaded on the stage, however, and the craft and food booths are set up, one of the most interesting parts of this year’s festival will be under construction.
