Chatham sculptor Karen Tiede has published Carve Smart: 100 Chainsaw Carvers from Around the World Answer Questions About Carving. Carve Smart addresses topics encountered by full- and part-time chainsaw carvers that are not covered in most step-by-step carving books: saws, bars and chain, wood and finishes, the carving business, a place to carve, skill, and ideas. It is a 190-page compilation of discussions shared on the CarvingPost.com forum over 2003.
Karen Tiede (Penguin Lady) fell for penguins on a trip to Antarctica and started chainsaw carving penguin decoys after lightning struck a tree in her yard. She joined the CarvingPost.com forum in January, 2002. Failure of the site’s search function one weekend led to the idea for this book, a permanent way to make the rich source of information available to chainsaw carvers everywhere, online or not.
