Pittsboro, NC - Chapel Hill gallery owner Jane Tyndall judged selected works by over 50 Chatham Artists Guild participants at the opening reception for the 15th Annual Chatham Open Studio Tour Friday November 29th at the Central Carolina Community College campus in Pittsboro.

“This was a most difficult assignment.” Tyndall said during the award ceremony, “every work of art here is exceptional.” Honorary mention was given to Woman with Long Arms, a wood sculpture by William Moore. Shannon Buecker’s painting Two Foxes & Orange-Colored Trees was awarded third place. Potter Mark Hewitt won second place with a large vessel Ludacris. Tyndall awarded first place to a striking metal sculpture titled Urban 2212 by Edwin White.

Although made from metal, Eddie White’s sculpture is unique in that the pieces are generally curvilinear and possess a light, airy quality. Both large and small scale mobiles require only the slightest air movement to turn or oscillate, showing off their most endearing trait, the interplay of line and light. Quite often mobiles and stationary pieces alike will create ever-changing moiré patterns. Pieces are cut from a variety of materials including galvanized sheet-metal, copper, cold-rolled black steel, and stainless steel. Painted pieces are sandblasted, primed and sprayed with multiple coats of industrial grade, exterior paint or for maximum protection, coated with a factory applied baked-on polyester powder finish.

The 15th Annual Open Studio will continue December 8&9 2007. Artists’ studios will be open Saturday 10AM until 5PM and Sunday Noon until 5 PM.
