JoolSchool at the ArtsCenter offering educational and fun courses

The JoolSchool at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro has put together a very exciting array of classes for the upcoming winter term. Silver casting, etching, cold connections, chain making, dichroic glass. All of this, plus one of the most fascinating recent additions: a course in Precious Metal Clay.

CLASSES AT THE ARTSCHOOL JOOL SCHOOL

2071 SILVER CASTING: ALMOST INSTANT JEWELRY!
Make a surprise casting from pure silver! Learn how to use a torch and smelt fine silver by casting the molten metal into wet straw. Suddenly, it's a pendant or earrings. Finish and polish the piece and you have your own creation in just eight hours! New and continuing students welcome.
$25 materials fee, paid to instructor at first class.

2072 ETCHING: ETCH YOUR SKETCH FOR BEGINNERS
Going from idea to bracelet in a minimum amount of time! We start with family stories that can be adapted to a bracelet format. We explore the means to develop these legends and create a beautiful design. The design is then transferred to the surface of Nu Gold (bronze) metal and then is etched and finished to emerge as a family heirloom. A luxurious bracelet in just eight hours! New and continuing students welcome.

2073 ALCHEMY AT ITS BEST WITH PMC (Precious Metal Clay)
For beginning as well as continuing students, this course features a clay-like substance that, when fired in a kiln, turns into a pure silver finished piece! You'll learn mold-making and kiln-firing skills, and continuing students will also learn expanded techniques of embellishments.
$55 materials fee, paid to instructor at first class, includes tool kit and one package of PMC clay (more clay will be available for purchase if desired).

2074 GETTING IT TOGETHER WITH COLD CONNECTIONS
If you're not ready for the torch, you can make fabulous pieces using a system of cold connections, otherwise known as riveting. In this course for beginning and continuing students, you'll learn design, sawing, and piercing, plus texturing and riveting.
$25 materials fee, paid to instructor at first class.

2075 CHAIN MAKING
Using ancient techniques, we will learn to make chains with closures. Beginning students will make a chain while learning to solder, form and weave the links. Returning or advanced students will make a medallion with a stone as well as a triple woven fused chain.

2076 REFLECTING ON GLASS: MAKING DICHROIC GLASS CABACHONS
Dichroic glass is a space-age material that can add sparkle to your handmade jewelry. Learn about the properties of this amazing material in this short course. Each student will make 4-8 cabachons, depending on size. $30 materials fee, paid to instructor at first class.

Please note: participants in the Jool School must be at least 18 years of age, except for courses in Precious Metal Clay, which can start as young as 13 (with parent).
Currently enrolled students are invited to free benchtimes to work on their projects, Wednesdays, 4-6:30pm. Previous students who are not enrolled this session, may buy benchtime at $7 per hour.
