Pittsboro, NC - The Pass Christian (Mississippi) Friends of the Public Library sent thanks to the Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library for their cash donation, a thank you to all those in the community who contributed. Of the many Harrison County Library System buildings heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina, Pass Christian was the first to get back on its feet.

The Pass Christian Friends have been using cash donations to pay for basic services for the library trailer, which was donated by DuPont and set up in the municipal park. The library has been serving as the tent city's community center since early November. Volunteers had to build a storage shed for the many books they have received, but cash donations are still needed to keep the library operating. Tax-deductible donation checks made out to Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library (with Mississippi Library Fund on the memo line) may be mailed to: Friends of the Pittsboro Memorial Library, P.O. Box 580, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Virgil Harris, President of the Pass Christian Friends, reminds us "The destruction in Pass Christian and along the Gulf Coast defies imagination.

As a measure of the degree of destruction, there were 4000 structures in Pass Christian before Hurricane Katrina and after the storm, 124 buildings remained that were habitable."

A Hillsborough (NC) resident, who has been leading teams of college students on clean-up missions, notes from her most recent trip, "We cannot even begin to convey the gratitude residents of Pass Christian feel, and the smiles (or tears of joy) shown because of your compassion. Without your support, helping others purchase goods and services needed to rebuild a life would simply not be possible. Your generosity and prayers have made all this possible, and we are deeply grateful!"
