Siler City, NC - From March through May 2015, artists from North Carolina will have the opportunity to be part of the Pop! Downtown Siler City art series, which will fill empty and idle storefront windows with art focused on the theme of Chatham Rabbits.

We are looking for a range of artistic installations and urban art interventions inspired by the theme of Chatham Rabbits, as well as the location, history, and general context of Siler City. From the late 19th Century until early 20th Century, Chatham County was known for its rabbits. These animals were shipped across the US for food and furs. Stories and history about the rabbit abound and have been featured in Our State magazine and UNC Press’s Southern Cultures.

You might propose a piece that captures a unique oral history from the time or something more abstract that touches on the intertwining of culture and commerce around the rabbits. All proposals should be unique, creative, and site-specific. Existing work can be submitted if it fits within these parameters. Please consider researching the site and context of your proposal before submitting. Open Art Society has some photos and documentation available. All requests and questions should be directed to Jessica Moore at art@openartsociety.org

A couple things to keep in mind as you develop your proposal:
- Your artwork should be appropriate for a storefront window on public streets. You’ll receive great exposure to a range of audiences, kids and adults alike.
– We are seeking proposals for high-quality, dynamic approaches to activating underutilized storefront window spaces empty spaces and current businesses. If you would like to incorporate a series of 2-D work in your storefront window please consider a narrative or theme to connect the individual works into a whole.

Proposals will be selected by local juror(s) who will consider some general requirements:
- Artwork should relate to the series theme: Chatham Rabbits
- Installation plan should creatively activate the space and engage passers-by
- Installations can be either static or continue to evolve throughout the installation period. Evolving installations should have an outline of how those changes will happen.
- Artists should clearly explain past experience and the ability to create original, innovative work that tailors to the space.

Proposals Requirements: Proposal submission deadline January 24, 2015, 11:59pm

To apply to be part of Pop! Downtown Siler City, please send the following information to art@openartsociety.org by the deadline January 24, 2015, 11:59PM. Only complete proposals will be considered. We recommend uploading all of your files to dropbox.com or box.com and emailing the link to your complete proposal files. Complete proposals must include the following information:
- 3-5 jpegs of your work with label info including title, medium, dimensions and description; if video, audio, or performance/time-based, please send a short clip.
- Resume/CV and brief bio
- A brief description (5-7 sentences) and sketch of the proposed installation & concept. If you are interested in a particular space, let us know and explain why in your description.
- If submitting as a collaborative/collective, please specify the main contact person and include bios of other key collaborators.

We will send a confirmation that we have received your proposal within two business days, so please check back if you haven’t heard from us. Early submission is encouraged!

Review process: A committee of local artists and curators will review proposals. The selection process is based mainly on previous work and experience, so please share as much as you can.

Contacting Businesses: Please do NOT contact the business you are interested in without first contacting Open Art Society (art@openartsociety.org). If you have a connection to a building or business owner who you think might be interested, again, please let us know first. This will ensure that all businesses and building owners are given the same information about participating and multiple people aren’t contacting the same person.

Additional Information.

Artist Compensation: A stipend of $200 is available per window installation. Installations can be done by individual artists or groups.

Determining Spaces: The selection committee will review the work of each artist and connect them with an appropriate space. If you are particularly interested in working in a space, let us know and we will try to assign that space to you. Much of the process of pairing artists with spaces depends on the logistics of the installation, as well as the site-specificity of the proposal.

Dates: Spring 2015 installations will begin in early March and must be completed by March 21. Installations will remain up through May 2015. Artists must be completely uninstalled by June 6, 2015. Specific installation and de-installation schedules will be negotiated with each artist/business pair.
