Deon Thompson had 23 points and eight rebounds to help No. 6 North Carolina beat Belmont Abbey 107-59 on Friday night in its only exhibition game. Tyler Zeller scored 17 points for the defending national champions, while Ed Davis added 13 points, six rebounds and four blocks. The Tar Heels shot 57 percent and took a 56-36 advantage on the boards against the undersized instate Division II program. North Carolina used a 10-0 spurt for a double-digit lead 6 minutes in, then put it out of reach with a 13-0 run that made it 55-29 shortly before halftime. North Carolina led by as many as 52 points.

Fifth-year senior Marcus Ginyard is among 60 NCAA men's and women's basketball student-athletes who excel both on and off the court and were tabbed as candidates for the 2009-10 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award on Nov. 4. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, character, community and competition.

One of the most confusing parts of the criteria for honoring jerseys has been cleared up, which means two new names will be added to the rafters. Wayne Ellington and Donald Williams talk about the honor, which is now being extended to Final Four Most Outstanding Players and ACC Players of the Year.

University of North Carolina sophomore forward Ed Davis, who helped guide the Tar Heels to the 2009 NCAA championship and was one of the top sixth men in the nation last season, has earned one of 50 spots on the 2009-10 Naismith preseason watch list, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. Seniors (19) and juniors (14) lead the way followed by 12 sophomores and five freshmen.

The University of North Carolina, the defending NCAA champions, will begin its national title defense as the sixth-ranked team in the 2009-10 preseason Associated Press poll, the AP announced on Thursday.

North Carolina tied Duke atop the 2009-10 Atlantic Coast Conference preseason poll and Tar Heel Ed Davis grabbed a spot on the preseason All-ACC team on Sunday as the conference's media assembled for the annual ACC Operation Basketball media day. The league's sportswriters and broadcasters gathered for interviews with players and coaches from all 12 conference squads and previewed the upcoming campaign.

Ed Davis exploded onto the college basketball scene last spring. Many of the skills that were so impressive during Carolina's march to a national championship were honed during Davis's lifelong advanced exposure to the game of basketball.

The 1968 season began just after Pat McGuire lost her battle to cancer in September, and Dean Smith was among the hundreds attending her funeral in New York. It was also a time of more upheaval in America, with much of the country growing concerned over President Lyndon Johnson's handling of the escalating war in Vietnam.

Carolina Basketball blends a little bit of new and old as the Tar Heels play their 100th season, this time as the defending national champions. Last year UNC defeated Michigan State to win the school's fifth NCAA Tournament crown and the second in five seasons under Hall of Fame head coach Roy Williams.

The University of North Carolina men's basketball team held its annual Mile Run on Friday morning, and freshman John Henson was the winner in a close race with classmate Dexter Strickland.

He was the old man in the sea of blue and white, the oldest participant in September's Professional Alumni Game at Chapel Hill. He is so old, he matriculated at UNC before this season's freshmen reached kindergarten. He is so old, the basketball program owned but two, not five, NCAA championships when he first donned a Tar Heel uniform. He is so old...well, you get the idea.

Tyler Zeller was off to a terrific start before suffering a broken wrist against Kentucky last season. After working his way back to play limited minutes at the end of last year, his play this summer has reminded teammates and former Tar Heels of the high potential of the seven-foot Indiana native.
